Oh heyyyyy … FANCY. 

I tried making this stitch every which way and this was the easiest but it does require you to really map out what the size of the filler is going to be. Starting with the dark blue would indeed make mapping it out easier but then stitching becomes a beast. I say: try it every which way and see what feels best.
